An ambitious Energy
Island vision was officially launched
in Anglesey this week. The vision aims to
establish a world-class centre of excellence for energy developments.
The Deputy First Minister of Wales, Ieuan Wyn Jones, AM, joined a range of stakeholders from the public and private sector at Coleg Menai, in Llangefni, to welcome the project, which will focus on o energy efficiency o low-carbon energy developments o nuclear decommissioning o supply chain development o infrastructure enhancement o skills and education. The NDA, which owns Wylfa Power Station on Anglesey and Trawsfynydd decommissioning site in the Snowdonia National Park, is contributing £96,000 to development of the high-level framework, which will provide a base to deliver the future work programme. A collaboration agreement between the key stakeholders is currently being finalised and is due to be signed in the autumn. Led by Anglesey County Council, the partners include the Welsh Assembly Government, Gwynedd County Council, Coleg Menai, BangorUniversity, trade unions, Magnox North and the NDA Speaking before the launch First Minister Carwyn Jones said: "This framework will create opportunities for Anglesey to benefit from a range of energy related projects- potentially attracting considerable new investment to the Island and creating high quality employment." The Isle of Anglesey County Council Leader, Councillor Clive McGregor, added: "Anglesey is well placed to become a hub for low-carbon energy generation, given its location, wealth of natural resources and skills base, both here and across the wider region. The programme explores how the Island could promote and benefit from a broad energy mix - including wind, tidal, biomass, and other micro-generation projects as well as the potential of a new nuclear build at Wylfa, which in itself will provide huge economic benefits." To help realise the vision, a £6 million construction programme is under way for a new energy fabrication and skills centre at Coleg Menai, Llangefni, the major further education college serving Anglesey and North West Wales. Supported by a £1.5 million contribution from the NDA, the centre will enable the development of a range of high-quality skills needed to support the local economy in the years ahead. Comments (0)
