In a further boost to Westinghouse following the announcement by BNFL's board that Toshiba is the preferred bidder for purchase of the subsidiary, Southern Nuclear has picked its AP1000 design for up to two new reactors at its two-unit Vogtle site in Georgia. Last year, Southern Nuclear Operating Company said it would need new baseload generation in 2015 and wanted to ensure nuclear was an option. At that time, Southern had not picked a reactor technology. Choosing a technology now does not mean a decision has been made to build any new units, Southern Nuclear and Georgia Power said today. Southern Nuclear, which operates Vogtle, and Georgia Power, which owns 45.7% of the plant, are owned by Southern Co. Southern Nuclear plans to begin the NRC licensing application process this summer. The existing Vogtle units are Westinghouse PWRs. Four units were originally planned for the Vogtle site. The AP1000 has also been picked by Progress Energy, Duke Power and the NuStart Energy consortium for potential construction. |
