An energy bill with incentives for nuclear power has been approved by the US senate today in a 74-26 vote. The bill now only requires President George W. Bush's signature to become law and he has indicated that he will be more than happy to do so. The bill includes federal risk insurance for delays in full-power operations of new nuclear plants and production tax credits for new power reactors, and makes new reactors eligible for federal loan guarantees. Chairman of the Senate energy committee Sen Pete Domenici (Republican, New Mexico), a principal architect of the bill and its nuclear-related provisions, said: "If you can't build a nuclear power plant in this country after this bill is signed, it can't be done." |
