UK industry is ready for new build, shows report

UK industry is ready to provide 80% of a sustained programme of new nuclear power stations, according to a report released today by the Nuclear Industry Association.

The report - an update to that released by the NIA in 2006 – shows that less than 5% of UK construction capability would be required to complete a programme of new power stations.

“There has been real commitment to developing skills across the engineering sector” commented NIA Chief Executive Keith Parker. “The UK nuclear industry holds a wealth of skilled and experienced workers – who will be key to building a future of secure low-carbon energy”.

The report concluded that:
  • Approximately 80% of nuclear new build is not nuclear, but is similar to other major construction projects.
  • UK industry could supply 70-80% of a new build programme.
  • Less than 5% of current UK construction resources will be required across the board, with significantly less in some skill areas.
  • With careful management, such resources could be recruited and trained during the project development, planning and licensing period.
