Press Release 28 June 2002 Tony Cooper becomes the new Chairman of the British Nuclear Industry Forum on July 1 2002. He is retiring from his position as Joint General Secretary of Prospect, a union that represents professional, scientific and managerial staff in the public and private sectors. He has been an articulate, persuasive and well-informed advocate of nuclear power over the last ten years. He said of his new position "I have been a supporter of the nuclear industry for a number of years as a Trade Union official on both environmental and economic grounds. I am delighted to be able to continue my association with the industry into the future". Tony is secretary of the Electricity Supply Trades Union Council and Chairman of the Trade Unions for Safe Nuclear Energy. He has recently been appointed to the new postal services regulatory body, The Postal Services Commission and to the Board of the Forestry Commission as a non-executive Commissioner. He was appointed to the DTI Energy Advisory Panel as an inaugural member by the previous Government and was elected in April 1998 to the EU Joint Energy Consultation Committee. He is an adviser to Government on its Energy Advisory Panel, and was a member of the PIU Energy Review Advisory Committee. We are delighted to welcome Tony on board" Tony worked for the Forestry Commission for 9 years, and then joined the Institution of Professional Civil Servants (IPCS) as a negotiator. He reached the position of Deputy General Secretary at IPCS (later renamed the IPMS) before leaving to join the EMA in 1990 as General Secretary. He led the EMA throughout its post-privatisation period and its recent merger with IPMS to create Prospect.
