Tony Cooper appointed to the NDA Board | Print |  E-mail
DTI has announced that NIA Chairman, Tony Cooper, has been appointed to the Board of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) as a non-executive director. We offer him our warm congratulations.

As a consequence Tony intends to resign his position as NIA Chairman at the AGM in December, but offers to continue his association with NIA as a consultant to the organisation.

Tony's resignation as Chairman accords with the plan agreed at the time of the NIA review at the end of 2003, that by 2005/06 he would step down to be replaced by an unpaid non-executive Chairman from among the existing Board members.

While we regret losing Tony as our Chairman, it is clear that he will remain a valued adviser to NIA in the future.

The other non-executive directors appointed today are:

Nick Baldwin, Lyndon Stanton, David Illingworth, Primrose Stark, and Roger Scott. Their biographies can be found below:

Nick Baldwin
Former Chief Executive of Powergen PLC. Chartered Engineer, FIEE, and FIMechE. Early career was with Thames Water and the Central Electricity Generating Board. Joined Powergen in 1989 and became Chief Executive in 2001. Since leaving Powergen, he holds the following Chairmanships: Advisory Board, Climate Change Projects Office (DEFRA/DTI); Regional Energy Strategy Steering Group (GOWM/WMRA); Worcester Community Housing Board; and is a Non Executive Director of the Forensic Science Service (Home Office). He is a member of the DTI Energy Group Advisory Board. He also advises on private equity ventures in the energy sector.

Lyndon Stanton
Early career with ICI and Arco Chemical Europe, holding various business development and business management roles, and latterly President & Chief Executive from 1994 to 1998, when the company merged with fellow American firm, Lyondell and he continued as President, Chief Executive. His current public appointments include Non Executive Director of the Environment Agency (DEFRA), and Deputy Chairman of the Churches Conservation Trust (DCMS).

David Illingworth
President, Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) from 2003 to 2004. From 2001 to 2002 he was Vice President, and from 2002 to 2003 was Deputy President. Qualified with KMG Thomson McLintock becoming Partner in 1975 (KMG Thomson McLintock merged with Peat Marwick Mitchell in 1987 to form KPMG). From 2001 to 2004 he was Senior Adviser. In conjunction with his Presidency he served as Chairman of the CCAB (Consultative Committee of Accounting Bodies), and as Director and Deputy Chair of the FRC (Financial Reporting Council). Member of the Takeover Panel from 2003 to 2004.

Primrose Stark
Early career in British Rail holding various Human Resources management roles. Former Human Resources Director at First Engineering Ltd having been part of the successful Management Employee Buy Out from BR. Served as a board member on the Railway Industry Training Council from 1997 to 2003.

Roger Scott
Academic career at the Scottish Universities Research and Reactor Centre, culminating as Director and Professor of Nuclear Science. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His academic research in both pure and applied nuclear physics and close involvement with all aspects of the decommissioning of a research reactor have led to in-depth knowledge of the relevant technical, regulatory and waste disposal issues. He is presently engaged part-time to produce and submit to HSE a case for delicensing the former reactor site at the above Centre. He has undertaken occasional consultancy work for BAe Systems and Halcrow.
