Restrictions on nuclear research were lifted and tighter safeguards put in place today by the Swedish parliament, the Riksdag. The Riksdag approved a change in the nuclear technology law to allow research that could lead to a new nuclear power station being built. The government asked for the change to facilitate nuclear research in general, including work on its final repository, although it reiterated that it is committed to early decommissioning of Sweden's reactors (although this policy may not survive the general election due later this year). Another change in the law, made for security reasons, means there will be less public information available about nuclear plants and that safeguards for nuclear installations can be tightened. |
