The Nuclear Industry warmly welcomes today's announcement by the government on its energy review findings. The review clearly signals nuclear power should continue to play a major part in the UK's energy mix and recognises that nuclear, alongside investment in renewables and energy efficiency, can make a significant contribution to tackling climate change. Keith Parker, chief executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, the body that represents the UK's 40,000 nuclear workers, said he was pleased with the review's emphasis on low carbon technologies. "Nuclear power offers reliable, secure and affordable low carbon electricity for the benefit both of consumers and the environment." Mr. Parker welcomed the government's proposals on carbon pricing and streamlining of planning and licensing processes. "I am confident the government's proposals will lead to private sector investment in all low carbon technologies, including renewables and nuclear," added Mr. Parker. The Nuclear industry is committed to working closely with the government to help achieve it's climate change objectives and to continue to ensure nuclear provides safe, reliable generation. |
