Reactor construction to start in South Korea | Print |  E-mail
Plans to start construction of two new units in South Korea - Shin-Kori-1 and -2 - have been given the go-ahead by the government. The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy (MOCIE) announced on 12 January that plans to start construction on the project in Pusan had been approved, ending months of delay and uncertainty about the project.

The new units, to be owned and operated by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power
(KHNP) are of Korea standard nuclear power plant plus design (KSNP ) - based on the Westinghouse System 80 technology design. Contracts have already been awarded on the project several years ago. BNFL's Westinghouse subsidiary has contracts to provide components, instrumentation and control equipment and technical and engineering support services for the units. The total cost of the project will be about $5 billion.

Difficulties in reaching agreement with local residents on construction compensation claims had contributed to the delay in starting the project.

South Korea now has 20 reactor units in operation following the grid connection on 8 December 2004 of Ulchin-6, a 960MW pressurised water reactor. Ulchin-6 is scheduled to start commercial operation in June 2005.
