Addressing the Labour Party conference in Manchester Tony Blair repeated his message following the energy review that the UK needs nuclear to maintain a share of the energy generation mix if the country is to have secure electricity supplies and meet its climate change targets. He said,
"10 years ago I parked the issue of nuclear power. Today, I believe without it, we are going to face an energy crisis and we can't let that happen."
Immediately proceeding the speech well over 100 delegates, journalists and industry representatives heard from Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks and Environment Minister Ian Pearson at a packed Nuclear Industry Association fringe meeting. They outlined why the energy review was coming up with the right answers and that it had to include new nuclear build to replace the existing capacity. The meeting chaired by Sellafield MP Jamie Reed was also addressed by Paul Longsworth of Fluor and Paul Noon, General Secretary of the Prospect union. |
