Adrian Ham begins work this month as the new Director-General of the British Nuclear Industry Forum (BNIF), the trade association and representative voice of the UK nuclear energy industry. Mr Ham was previously Director of Consultancy Services at British Energy and has worked in the nuclear industry for ten years. He has also held posts in a number of prominent companies including British Aerospace, Alcan Aluminium and British Waterways. Prior to working in industry, Mr Ham worked at the heart of government and politics, as special advisor to Denis Healey, Chancellor of the Exchequer in the 1974-79 Labour Government. Profile: Adrian Ham Adrian Ham begins work this month as the new Director-General of the British Nuclear Industry Forum (BNIF), the trade association and representative voice of the UK nuclear industry. He brings to the position an extensive and successful track record in industry and government, and significant international experience. Adrian has worked in the nuclear industry for ten years and has also held posts in prominent companies including British Aerospace, Alcan Aluminium and British Waterways. Before working in industry, Mr Ham worked at the heart of government, as special advisor to Denis Healey, Chancellor in the 1974-79 Labour Government. Prior to his BNIF appointment, Adrian was Director of Consultancy Services at British Energy. Appointed to that post in 1996, he was part of the company's steering group on regulatory change and has been closely involved in issues surrounding the New Electricity Trading Arrangements and the company's relations with Ofgem. He worked on various projects related to British Energy's acquisitions of nuclear stations in the USA and Canada, and was also heavily involved in successfully developing new business contacts in Eastern Europe, particularly Bulgaria, Ukraine, Russia and the Czech Republic. In Ukraine, Adrian directed the EU-funded project to create a new commercial power company 'Energoatom'. Such projects have further developed his negotiating, linguistic and entrepreneurial skills. His knowledge of the European Commission and European Parliament and extensive contacts in Brussels, have helped open up market access in countries as diverse as Switzerland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, and Ukraine. Adrian Ham joined the nuclear industry in 1990, as Chief Economist at Nuclear Electric plc. In 1994 he became Head of the company's Energy Markets Division. These roles refined his knowledge of the electricity and wider energy markets, and specific knowledge of strategic planning and structural reorganization, including market liberalization and regulatory change. During this time, he was the company's representative to the Prince of Wales's Business and the Environment Forum. From 1984-89, he worked at British Waterways, where he developed the first ever corporate plan for the enterprise. His role there also included Government Relations, and extensive media appearances. Previously, he was Economic Advisor at British Aerospace, specializing in R&D issues, and Commercial Director at Alcan Aluminium. Between 1974 and 1976, Adrian was Special Advisor to Denis Healey MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer in the last Labour Government, responsible to the Chancellor for political and economic briefing. His role also involved liaison with MPs and with other Ministries, including Industry, Energy, and the Prime Minister's Policy Unit. This gave him detailed knowledge of the UK political system and civil service, and wide contacts in Government and across the major political parties in the UK. Born in 1944, Adrian Ham is the author of two books and numerous articles in industry and specialist journals. He has given many television and radio interviews and has good relations with the national and international press. He is married with two children and his leisure pursuits include golf and painting. |
