The UK nuclear industry today warmly welcomed a new government manufacturing strategy which will provide focus on the pathway to new nuclear build in Britain and around the world. The details of how the specially-created Office of Nuclear Development (OND) will work closely with the UK nuclear supply chain and reactor vendor companies was greeted with enthusiasm by the UK’s nuclear trade body. Keith Parker, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association (NIA), said government focus on the nuclear supply chain would ensure UK companies benefited from domestic and worldwide opportunities. “We welcome this announcement and support the government’s commitment to ensuring the UK’s nuclear supply chain is robust and ready to benefit from a global nuclear renaissance.” “Clarity on how government and industry can work together to create a globally competitive supply chain is extremely important. Our association plays a central role in working towards improving the commercial performance and opportunities of our member companies. Working closely with government is key in ensuring the UK is at the hub of worldwide nuclear development.” Mr. Parker added: “There is internationally renowned nuclear expertise among our members. With focus and support in the right areas we will ensure companies in the supply chain have clarity and knowledge on the needs of the new nuclear build programme both here and overseas.” The government’s strategy provides more details on how the Office of Nuclear Development will work with the supply chain by identifying blockages, assisting with new programmes to develop companies’ expertise and helping raise awareness of UK nuclear expertise globally. The NIA, supported by OND, the regional development agencies, UK Trade and Investment and other key agencies will develop a national programme of initiatives aimed at improving capability among supply chain companies.
