The Nuclear Installations Inspectorate has cleared the THORP reprocessing plant at Sellafield for restart. The nuclear safety regulator has stated that British Nuclear Group, who operate the facility on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, has completed all the required safety work on the plant following the 2005 spillage which caused its closure. A decision on exactly when to restart the plant rests with the NDA as they need to ensure sufficient evaporator capacity is available before restart.
