The Nuclear Industry Association has welcomed the Prime Minister's remarks at the CBI annual dinner today confirming that nuclear power, alongside renewables and increased energy efficiency will contribute towards the UK's future energy needs. Mr Blair stressed that the country faces dependence on imported gas for 80 or 90% of the country's energy needs, and that the Government's Energy Review needs to address this concern. The review must also address the need to reduce carbon emissions, and so has come at a crucial time. NIA's Chief Executive, Keith Parker said, "Nuclear energy is a large scale, low carbon source of electricity generation. As part of a diverse, balanced energy mix, nuclear can help to ensure the security of energy supply. We welcome the Prime Minister's comments as a recognition of this".
Mr Blair has said that concerns about dependence on gas imports have "put the replacement of nuclear power stations, a big push on renewables and a step change on energy efficiency, engaging both business and consumers, back on the agenda with a vengeance". |
