The nuclear industry today warmly welcomed a key report from Westinghouse outlining the potential for a £30 billion benefit to the UK's economy from nuclear new build. The Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) backed the report, which highlighted how production of Westinghouse's AP1000 nuclear reactor could deliver in excess of £30 billion of value to the UK's economy. Keith Parker, chief executive of NIA welcomed the report, saying nuclear new build "could create thousands of jobs and help establish the UK at the heart of a global nuclear supply chain." "I am delighted to see this report which outlines how opportunities in new nuclear can be maximised for the UK's benefit." Secretary of State John Hutton welcomed the report saying: "Nuclear is absolutely indispensible for long-term energy security, bringing British jobs and a wealth of opportunities for UK manufacturers." The report, entitled "Maximising Opportunities for the UK Supply Chain" emphasised localisation of opportunities and won favour from leading unions. Dougie Rooney, National Officer, Unite said: "We want to look the British public in the eye and show there is a discernable benefit from growth in the engineering industries and this report illustrates many opportunities from developing the UK nuclear supply chain".
