NIA Chief Executive Keith Parker today welcomed the Conservative Party’s report on “The Low Carbon Economy”. Mr. Parker, who head's the nuclear industry's trade body, representing some 160 nuclear firms and more than 80,000 workers in the UK nuclear industry said: “The Conservative Party clearly understands the need to move towards a low-carbon economy whilst maintaining a secure and stable electricity supply”. “Nuclear energy can play a crucial role in achieving both of these aims – and it is reassuring for the industry that the Conservative party recognise the important contribution that nuclear makes to providing low-carbon, secure and stably priced electricity to consumers at all levels across the UK”. “The ambitious aims for the transport sector outlined in “The Low Carbon Economy” would further increase the contribution needed from low-carbon base-load electricity sources, making nuclear power even more crucial to the UK’s electricity generating mix”.
