THE UK nuclear industry has strongly challenged pressure group suggestions that new power stations will require government subsidy. The UK trade body – The Nuclear Industry Association – has slammed suggestions made in a Friends of the Earth report published yesterday (29/5) that taxpayers will be required to pay for replacing Britain’s existing nuclear fleet. The report inaccurately suggests that the economics of nuclear don’t add-up – even though major utilities are expressing keen interest in investing in new nuclear build. “The private sector understands that there will be no subsidy – and there is still significant interest in investing in new nuclear for the UK,” said NIA chief executive Keith Parker. “The government has made clear that the private sector will fund the development, operation, decommissioning and waste management of any new nuclear power stations,” he added. “The economics of nuclear are competitive as the government’s own analysis in their white paper demonstrated. Private companies are seeing the real opportunities that this offers for UK business – not to mention the notable benefits to the UK as a whole through increased security of supply and reduced carbon emissions”.
