The fifth unit of Japan's Hamaoka nuclear power plant has begun commercial operation after having passed a series of pre-operational inspections by the regulators.

Hamaoka-5 is a 1,325-megawatt (MW) advanced boiling water reactor (ABWR) and brings Japan's total of commercial operating reactors to 53 (there is one in decommissioning. It is the first reactor to be commissioned for 3 years.
