Managing radioactive waste safely | Print |  E-mail

NIA welcomes clear progress on waste management.

The UK nuclear industry has welcomed today’s Government White Paper on Managing Radioactive Waste Safely.

The White Paper – which outlines a process of voluntarism and partnership in repository siting - is seen as a vital step in the ongoing progress of long-term waste management in the UK. It invites communities to express an interest in opening discussions on the possibility of hosting a repository and sets out the process towards delivering a sustainable disposal facility.

NIA Chief Executive Keith Parker commented, “The Government had already decided upon a method for waste disposal and this White Paper represents an important step in the process to delivering a UK repository.”

“Nuclear has a crucial role to play in delivering secure supplies of low-carbon electricity and today’s developments are further evidence of the clear plans in place for dealing with waste.”

He continued, “This is important for the long-term management of our legacy waste and can give confidence for the disposal of waste created through any nuclear new build.”
