Prominent Liberal Democrat environment campaigner, Chris Davies MEP, today further emphasised his support for nuclear power. Mr Davies has spoken in recent days of his belief that the dangers of global warming outweighed his reservations on nuclear power, and today he announced this in a speech to the party’s annual conference in Brighton. He said that we must use “every weapon at our disposal” to tackle global climate change and made clear that in his view this could include a nuclear element to the UK’s energy mix. Mr Davies, formerly a strong opponent of nuclear, made clear that the nuclear industry should expect no special treatment from government and suggested that a chequered history has increased distrust of the industry. But stating that civil nuclear power is “a weapon that the Liberal Democrats have long refused to use”, Davies called on his party to abandon their official opposition to UK nuclear new build in the interests of climate stability. Chris Davies explains his change of heart on his website at: http://www.chrisdaviesmep.org.uk/news/2007/Sept/nuclear%20options.htm |
