On 27 February the inaugural meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Nuclear Energy took place in the House of Commons. 17 Parliamentarians from both Houses of Parliament attended the meeting, and a further 50 who were unable to attend pledged their support and interest in the Group. The meeting heard presentations from Robert Armour on the situation at British Energy, and from Adrian Ham, Chief Executive of the British Nuclear Industry Forum, on the industry's response to the energy White Paper.
The meeting formally elected the Group's officers who are Bill Tynan MP, Chairman, Lord Christopher OBE, the Rt Hon Lord Jenkin of Roding and Lord McNally who are Vice Chairmen, David Drew MP, Secretary and Jimmy Hood MP, Treasurer. The officers will be meeting shortly to decide the Group's forward programme of meetings and visits.
The purpose of the All-Party Group is to encourage and facilitate discussion among MPs and Peers from across the political spectrum with an interest in nuclear issues, and to provide a forum for the exchange of information and views between Parliamentarians and representatives of the nuclear and energy industries. Administrative support for the Group's activities is being provided by BNIF and Trade Unionists for Safe Nuclear Energy. |
