The Kyoto Protocol, an agreement between 141 countries to cut down carbon emissions in an attempt to slow down the process of global warming, has come into effect with celebrations across the globe. The Protocol, which was originally agreed upon seven years ago, has been ratified by countries producing 55% of total greenhouse gas emissions. Its aim is to cut emissions by 5.2% by 2012, with each country setting individual targets. The UK has a target of cutting emissions by 12.5% by 2012, which it is currently on track to do. However the UK government has set itself a tougher target of a 20% reduction which it has admitted that it is unlikely to reach. The US has not agreed to the treaty for economic reasons and large developing countries such as China, India and Brazil are currently exempt from requirements to meet specific targets. NIA welcomes the Kyoto Protocol on behalf of the nuclear industry. Nuclear energy can play a significant role in reaching Kyoto targets as it produces virtually no carbon emissions. Countries across the globe are planning the construction of new nuclear power stations in a bid to generate large scale environmentally friendly electricity. |
