The six countries planning to build the largest experimental fusion reactor to date have again failed to reach a decision on siting. The reactor known as ITER will be constructed as the next step towards a commercial fusion power generation plant.
The six nations planning to build the world's biggest nuclear fusion reactor ended their latest meeting at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna with no agreement on a site for the facility. The deadlock has been going on for a year now with the EU, Russia and China supporting France as the site of ITER and Japan, South Korea and the USA supporting Japan. Europe has warned it could go it alone if the matter is not resolved soon looking for other countries such as India, Switzerland and Canada (who used to be part of the ITER project) to participate replacing the original other three countries. The EU's Council of Ministers will consider this issue in about a month. |
