India wants to increase its nuclear capacity | Print |  E-mail
A senior Indian official, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, deputy chairman of India's Planning Commission, has said that India's nuclear capacity could increase by about 60,000MW in the next 25 years.

He emphasised that the scenario was "not actually planned" but was discussed in a draft energy planning document. He said the 60,000 MW figure came from calculations based on factors such as the price prospects for oil, difficulties of hydroelectric construction, and the need to limit use of carbon based fuels. He said an increase on that scale, India currently has about 3,000 MW of nuclear capacity, would be possible only if a US led proposal for expanding nuclear trade with India was implemented. He declined to say what percentage of the 60,000 MW would come from imported reactors, saying that level of detail had not been worked out.
