The French Government is organising a roundtable meeting between EDF and intensive energy users in France to discuss ways to ensure the long-term stability of electricity prices. This will include looking at the possibility of industry investing in the financing the first French EPR reactor at Flamanville in Normandy. Ministers have cited Finland as an example, where utility TVO, whose shareholders are mainly high electricity users, is building the first EPR. Large power consumers have seen power rates rise as their long-term contracts expire, and some have threatened to leave France if a solution isn't found. EDF has been trying to attract large companies like Alcan to the Flamanville project, but they have been reluctant so far to take on what they see as undue risk. |
