First Sellafield MOX fuel operational | Print |  E-mail
The first MOX fuel made at the Sellafield MOX Plant (SMP) has been loaded into Beznau-1 in Switzerland and the reactor restarted, British Nuclear Group has announced. SMP has now begun to fabricate a second batch of MOX assemblies for Nordostschweizerische Kraftwerke (NOK), the Swiss utility that owns the Beznau station.

British Nuclear Group has said that it has a more aggressive (fabrication) plan this year. The plan is for 12 assemblies for the fiscal year ending 31 March 2006. SMP is not yet operating at its designated rate but it is accelerating after overcoming more than three years of technical problems before it was able to start fully operating earlier in 2005.
