The Industry, Research and Energy Committee of the European Parliament has rejected the nomination of Hungarian Foreign Minister László Kovács as Energy Commissioner. While the fact that he is an ex-communist seems to have prompted some Conservative members to vote against him the vast majority were concerned that that Mr Kovács displayed a very poor grasp of energy policy.
The European Parliament does not have the power to block the appointment of individual Commissioners it can vote to reject the entire Commission. The Committee Chairman UK Conservative Giles Chichester has written to incoming Commission President José Manuel Barroso to express their concerns. The Parliament is putting pressure on Mr Barroso to reshuffle his team because otherwise there is a danger that the whole Commission may be rejected. |
