On 25 July, formal consent was given by the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate to the 432-MW Dungeness A magnox station to begin decommissioning near the end of 2006. Dungeness A will join Sizewell A magnox station in their plans which had received consent in May 2006. Both have been generating electricity for 40 years. The two stations should be completely defueled by 2009 after which only two of the original 26 magnox reactors will remain open: 950-MW Wylfa, 35 years old, and 434-MW Oldbury, 38 years old. With Wylfa due to close in 2010 and Oldbury in 2008, the Sellafield B205 magnox reprocessing plant will be able to start planning its closure in 2012. This will all play a role in furthering the UK's efforts to reduce radioactive ocean discharges to near zero by 2020. |
