Dalton seeks industrial partners for research programmes
27-Nov-2006

A new Nuclear Engineering Doctorate (Nuclear EngD) degree has been launched by the EPSRC as part of the drive to establish the next generation of nuclear engineers for the UK. The EngD programme is offered by a consortium of UK universities, led by the Dalton Nuclear Institute at The University of Manchester in partnership with Imperial College London, and supported by the universities of Bristol, Leeds, Sheffield and Strathclyde.

This call for proposals is aimed at prospective industrial partners to help establish industrially based research programmes in collaboration with one of the participating universities.

Through collaboration with industrial partners, the Nuclear EngD will develop outstanding young nuclear engineers with intensive, broadly based training so that they are equipped to take up senior roles within the nuclear industry. In addition to obtaining a high quality qualification research engineers will gain experience of working up to 75% of their time within an industrial research and development environment. The Nuclear EngD programme comprises:

1. A doctoral level research project undertaken substantially within industry 2. A management diploma delivered by the Manchester Business School 3. Taught technical modules provided at appropriate universities within the consortium 4. A professional development programme coordinated by the EngD Centre at The University of Manchester

The technical research themes being offered include:

Reactor technology (including reactor physics, coolant chemistry and fuels) waste management (including chemical separation, encapsulation and geological disposal) decommissioning (including characterisation, decontamination and effluent treatment) materials including (structural integrity, materials ageing and inspection) socio-economic aspects (including scenario studies, security and societal issues) Safety Systems (including control and instrumentation, human performance and risk management)

The closing date for proposals is 12 January 2007, with a start date for successful projects being September 2007
