First concrete has been poured for Pakistan's Chashma-2 nuclear power station, two months ahead of schedule. Chinese industry built the 300-MW Chashma-1 and has the contract for the second unit (which was signed in May 2004) due for completion in 2011 at an estimated cost of $850million. The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission plans to have 8,800 nuclear megawatts installed by 2030 and is investigating sites along the Indus River and the coast. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has also established controls on nuclear materials and know-how. |
