Committee shortlists waste options | Print |  E-mail
At their 12th public meeting, which took place in Birmingham on 17 November, the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management, CoRWM, shortlisted the options for managing nuclear waste in the UK.

The Committee separated the 15 options into colour-coded categories as a means of whittling them down to a workable shortlist. They highlighted the fact that they intend this to be a preliminary shortlist and will be returning to it over the coming months, with a provisional deadline of March next year for the final shortlist. The results were as follows:

GREEN - options meeting CoRWM's shortlisting criteria:
Deep Disposal, Phased Deep Disposal, Interim.

AMBER - options where one or more CoRWM members would like more information before forming a view:
Sub-seabed Disposal; Near-surface Disposal; Space Disposal; Indefinite Storage.

RED - options not meeting CoRWM's shortlisting criteria:
Ice-sheet Disposal; Disposal in Subduction Zones; Sea Disposal; Direct Injection; Dilute and Disperse

BLUE - options to be considered, but as treatments rather than options:
P&T; burning in reactors; incineration; melting metals.

The committee released a consultation document on the options for waste management on 5 November and are inviting responses from the public by 21 January 2005.
