Cogent, the Sector Skills Council for the oil and gas extraction, chemicals manufacturing and petroleum industries, is an employer-led organisation charged with meeting the skills, workforce development and business needs in its sectors. It is supported in its role by trade associations, trade unions and local governments across the United Kingdom. Since 1st January 2004, Cogent has also been working for the nuclear and polymer industries. Initially licensed by the Department for Education and Skills as a trailblazer SSC, Cogent is now in the final stages of seeking formal government approval to operate as a Sector Skills Council for all five sectors. As part of the process, Cogent is building an independent and influential Board of Directors representing these industries in the four UK nations. Board members will be:
Board members will commit to attending up to six Board meetings per year. There will also be a commitment to standing committees and other employer groups which may take up an additional six days per year. Directors are non-executive and unpaid although appropriate expenses will be reimbursed. We are particularly keen to hear from employers in small and medium businesses in any of the five industries covered by Cogent.
