China is paving the way towards the construction of the first "pebble bed" nuclear reactor in the eastern province of Shandong. A consortium led by Huangeng, one of China's major generators, has announced that the 195MW gas cooled reactor could be operating commercially by 2010. If the backers are successful, the reactor will be the first Generation III reactor to operate, putting China at the forefront of technological development in the field. |
