Coal Authority boss, Dr Ian Roxburgh has been appointed as the first Chief Executive of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). Responding to the appointment Chairman Sir Anthony Cleaver said: "I am delighted to have found a candidate whose experience is as relevant to our work as Ian Roxburgh. As CEO of the Coal Authority he has knowledge of the energy sector and of safely dealing with a historic legacy. "He brings to the NDA a career background in both public and private sectors. During his tenure at the Coal Authority he has introduced new approaches to safety testing and risk management and has strengthened connections with environmental regulators. His forward thinking and leadership has enabled the Authority to remain at the cutting edge of technological advancement whilst ensuring best value for stakeholders. "The NDA will greatly benefit from the leadership of a man with a track record of successful negotiation and stakeholder dialogue. He is aware of the challenges we will face in cleaning up Britain's civil nuclear legacy and has faced many similar challenges himself in the clean-up of the legacy of coal. We will work together to ensure there is a balance between safety measures and economic viability alongside the need to manage the clean-up of polluted and potentially unstable installations." Much preparatory work has already been completed to ensure the NDA can be effective from its launch on 1 April. Dr Roxburgh said: "I am delighted to be given the opportunity to take on this significant challenge which changes the face of the nuclear industry. The excitement of building an organisation along with gaining the trust and confidence of everyone involved cannot be under estimated but I recognise the difficulties we will face. I am looking forward to joining the NDA on 13 September and meeting my new team."
