Immediate Past-President, The Institution of Mechanical Engineers
John McDougall is a Chartered Engineer who worked for nearly 30 years with the multi-discipline consultancy WS Atkins Consultants Limited. Educated at Teesside Polytechnic his career prior to Atkins was mainly with the Davy Corporation, Whessoe and Sterling Furnaces in engineering design and manufacture of capital plant. He joined the Atkins group in 1975 as a Project Engineer and his promotion to Managing Director in 1991 recognised his dedication and commitment to the aims of the Atkins Group. He resigned from the Atkins Board in November 2000 to pursue his interests in independent consulting, specialising in corporate change and business management. During the same year he joined the board of the Baker Mallett partnership to oversee their plans for restructuring. He was appointed President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in May 2002 and in the same year Sheffield Hallam University appointed him Professor of Sustainable Development.
