As part of NIA's programme of engaging young politicians a small group from the Liberal Democrat Youth and Students (LDYS) visited Sizewell in May accompanied by representatives of NIA and British Energy. The visit aimed to explain the industry to the participants and allow them to see the operation of a nuclear station. The day consisted of a presentation of how the station worked and of the electricity grid. They were also giving the chance to meet Mark Salisbury, one of the site chemists, who is a member of BNES' Young Generation Network, to discuss the opportunities he had as a young person in the industry. The group were then given a tour of the station followed by a demonstration of the control room simulator. All of the LDYS members present felt that the day dispelled many of the myths that surround the industry.
The event concluded with a discussion of energy policy over dinner with other LDYS members including members of their parliamentary research team. The debate, coming only a week after the general election, was lively and well informed with the Liberal Democrat participants feeling that they learnt a lot from the event. In particular they appreciated that if they were serious about preventing global warming then the nuclear option cannot be discounted. NIA will be holding similar events with youth members of both the Labour and Conservative parties over the coming months.
