The Institute of Mechanical Engineers (ImechE) held their annual parliamentary reception in February in the library of their offices on Birdcage Walk in London, and invited NIA to exhibit. The event was well attended and demonstrated the rising interest in the issues surrounding energy policy and the nuclear industry from MPs and Lords.

A number of parliamentarians, including Andrew Robathan MP and Lord Howell discussed the issues with NIA representatives, Miranda Kirschel and Simon James, showing particular interest in comparisons of radioactive waste produced from current and future reactor technologies, and the economics of energy sources on the whole.

There was a strong interest in the equivalent volumes of energy produced from a single uranium fuel pellet compared to vast quantities of oil, coal or natural gas. A number of delegates were keen to be included on the All Party Parliamentary Group on Nuclear Energy's distribution list. A good deal of support for the industry's future was demonstrated by attendees across the board. ImechE also held a seminar on 13 April on primary and alternative energy sources, supply infrastructure, and corporate social responsibility, an equally successful event.
