The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) came into being on 1 April 2005 and now has responsibility for overseeing decommissioning work on all of the UK’s civil public sector nuclear sites. |

NIA at the ImechE Parliamentary reception |

The Institute of Mechanical Engineers (ImechE) held their annual parliamentary reception in February in the library of their offices on Birdcage Walk in London, and invited NIA to exhibit. The event was well attended and demonstrated the rising interest in the issues surrounding energy policy and the nuclear industry from MPs and Lords. |

At the end of February NIA distributed a report entitled “The impact of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority on the supply chain”to all its members. The establishment of the NDA on 1 April heralds profound changes for the structure of the industry, and for the way in which the decommissioning and clean-up of the historic legacy previously owned and operated by BNFL and UKAEA, will be managed. |

New reactor for Bulgaria |

The Bulgarian government has approved the construction of a new 2,000MW light water reactor at Belene. The government approved the proposal on 7 April. The project, which is estimated to cost €2.5 billion, will be the biggest investment in Bulgaria in the next 10 years. |

NIA is preparing to move in early May into new and significantly better premises in Pall Mall/St James’s Square with the World Nuclear Association (WNA). This move will give staff better working conditions in a light, well equipped, open plan arrangement in contrast to our current cramped offices in Whitehall.

Pakistan starts construction |

Pakistan has started construction on its Chashma-2 reactor. It has also announced that it intends to build 8,800MW of nuclear capacity in the coming 25 years. The second Chashma unit, like the first, will be a 300MW PWR built by Chinese industry.
