As part of the NIA 2004/05 Export Programme a team of five NIA members accompanied by UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) and NIA staff visited Toronto over a week in October.

The Bruce Power plant in Kincardine, Ontario
As part of the NIA 2004/05 Export Programme a team of five NIA members accompanied by UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) and NIA staff visited Toronto over a week in October.

The visit was arranged at the request of NIA members seeking to gain an understanding of the Canadian nuclear market and current opportunities. Assistance with funding was provided by UKTI for the smaller companies attending.

During the visit joint meetings and seminars took place with Ontario Power Generation, Nuclear Safety Solutions, Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd, Bruce Power, FCX Newman Hattersley Valves and the Organisation of CANDU Industries. Visits to OPG's Pickering Nuclear Plant and Bruce Power Plant provided an opportunity to view the installed plant and equipment and meet with station staff. A joint NIA/British Consulate reception was hosted at the home of the British Consul General in Toronto towards the end of the week and was attended by about forty Canadian organisations.

NIA members participating in the visit included Alpha Engineering, ANTECH, Centronic, FCX Thompson Valves and RTS Nuclear Solutions. During the seminars with OPG and Bruce Power and the other meetings with Canadian companies a useful exchange took place which included information on:

  • the current status of the Canadian nuclear industry and work opportunities within it
  • UK suppliers interested in entering the market in Canada with presentations from each of the UK companies represented
  • NIA and the current status of the UK nuclear industry

Opportunity for questions and discussion by all
The evening reception at the home of the British Consul General in Toronto was very successful and well attended by companies and organisations working in the Canadian nuclear industry and provided a very useful networking opportunity for NIA members.

Overall the visit proved very successful, fulfilling its objectives and providing an opportunity for members to make contact with many of the main companies operating in the Canadian nuclear industry. It has subsequently resulted in possible business for at least one UK Company attending. NIA members are encouraged to participate in further missions included in future export programmes. Watch out for details that are circulated prior to each event.

Thanks are extended to all the participating Canadian Companies and the British Consul General and his staff for the exceptional welcome, assistance and cooperation they provided during the visit.

NIA visit to China 2-9 April 2005
NIA's 2005/6 Export Programme includes a visit to Shanghai this April, providing an excellent opportunity for members to participate in the 6th International Exhibition on the Nuclear Power Industry, "Nuclear 2005". Funding for smaller members has been arranged with UKTI.

Participation in this event will allow NIA members to network with Chinese and foreign enterprises that operate in the nuclear services market and use goods, services, materials and technologies employed in the nuclear sector.

Details of the event have already been circulated and a number of NIA member companies have already confirmed participation. If this trip is of interest to you please contact Norman Buckley at NIA at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it
