Some of NIA's major new initiatives focus on young people and external relations. Here are some of the exciting projects we are coordinating: Some of NIA's major new initiatives focus on young people and external relations. Here are some of the exciting projects we are coordinating:

Participants enjoy themselves at the young speakers course at Harwell
In May, NIA held the second young speakers workshop, offering young people in the industry an opportunity to learn valuable techniques for presenting on nuclear issues. The event included a dinner and overnight stay at a hotel and a full day's 'presenting in nuclear' programme, led by PR guru Kevin Read of Bell Pottinger. Using interactive techniques, Kevin demonstrated how best to make an impact, how to reverse traditional prejudices and misinformation, reset the narrative, appreciate the platform and engage in debate. All the delegates felt the programme was enjoyable and valuable and the skills have already been put to good use. NIA would like to take this opportunity to thank BNFL for sponsoring this programme. As a result of the success of the two workshops held so far, we are planning to run a third workshop later in the year. Anyone interested in participating should contact Kate Amos on 020 7766 6640 or This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it

This year NIA have made valuable contacts with young political groups and have initiated an interactive stream of events at which prominent scientists, academics and politicians have presented. With this project we hope to help inform the future opinion formers and decisions makers of the country, engage them in dialogue and introduce them to the industry. We have held dinners and organised forthcoming events with Young Labour, Young Fabians and Conservative Future, and are organising a visit to Sizewell B for Liberal Democrat Youth and Students. NIA also made a well recieved presentation at a major European Democrat Student (the Europeanwide conservative student organisation) conference in London. These events are being held in Westminster as well as regionally, and have so far been hugely successful. NIA will also be holding Nuclear Outlook receptions at this year's Conservative and Liberal Democrat Party Conferences, which are geared towards encouraging contact between young political groups and the nuclear industry with a positive outlook to the future.

NIA are delighted to be coordinating a visit of a party of executives, officials and politicians from Finland, to enable them to recount details of the Finnish nuclear experience. In association with the Scientific Alliance, NIA will be welcoming representatives of waste management company, Posiva, and electricity generator, TVO, who will be describing the complex processes undertaken to reach decisions to build a final high level waste repository and consequently, a fifth nuclear reactor. The party will address a joint Scientific Alliance / NIA fringe meeting and dinner during Labour Party Conference and also participate in a number of high level meetings and workshops with prominent political figures and departmental officials, as well as industry members, academics and scientists. We very much look forward to welcoming them to the UK and gaining an insight into their experience.
