The French have decided to join the Finns in building a new nuclear reactor. The board of EDF has decided to build an European Pressurised Water Reactor (EPR) unit (the same design as Finland recently ordered) although it has yet to decide on the site. Unlike the Finnish order, EDF regards this as a prototype for the eventual replacement of its oldest reactors and so it could be the first of many new reactors as the French Government is determined to maintain the market share of nuclear in France.
EDF Chairman Franois Roussely will consult with stakeholders in each of the possible locations concerned over the next month and will report back to the board on possibilities for the location for the reactor at that time. Following that, there will be public consultation before final authorisation can be given.
It is expected that the EPR will take 57 months to construct following final approval being given.
