Addressing an audience of some 80 academics, government officials and members of the nuclear industry Professor Sir David King, Scientific Advisor to 10 Downing Street reiterated his belief that CO2 reduction is the biggest problem facing us this century and said that a potential reliability of supply crisis "must mean that nuclear has to be kept in the frame".

The United States introduced a comprehensive Energy Bill to the US Senate in 2003. Enactment of the Energy Bill is needed to reinforce electric reliability, foster more efficient, competitive electric power markets, promote fuel diversity, and expand our energy supplies and productions while also stressing efficiency and wide use of existing resources.

The standing programme of NIA Working Groups has continued since the beginning of this year. These have included the Decommissioning Working Group on 18 March with the theme "Decommissioning Experience" and Industrial Affairs Working Group meetings on 21 January and 28 April, with member representation remaining at a good level for all meetings.

With baited breath we await Government policy on the long-term fate of the UK's radioactive waste. The response was, Ministers appointing CoRWM (Committee on Radioactive Waste Management), to review the options, from burying it underground to storing on the surface, even to shooting it at the sun as suggested recently in the Guardian.

The All Party Group on Nuclear Energy held a joint debate on Tuesday 9 March with the Parliamentary Group for Energy Studies, proposed by Bill Tynan MP and chaired by Paddy Tipping MP. Malcolm Grimston, Senior Research Fellow at Imperial College, supported the motion and Dr Tony White of Climate Change Capital represented the sceptical position.

The Energy Bill, which includes proposals for the establishment of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, has now completed its passage through the House of Lords. Much of the debate in the Lords focussed on the sections of the Bill which concerned the nuclear industry.
