I wonder if the Regulators gathering recently in Rome appreciated the irony of meeting in a country which has suffered two large scale blackouts or let themselves, for just a moment, consider the possibility that with New Zealand, California, the US and Canadian east coast, Denmark and for a short time London, this might just be part of a trend.

The NIA was again present at the Labour Party conference this autumn. As the trade body for the nuclear industry it is important to maintain the profile of the industry with government and counter anti-nuclear lobbying from 'green' groups. To this end the NIA had a stall in the conference exhibition area, which was well received by delegates.

Nuclear energy is a controversial issue and arouses strong emotions. The nuclear industry has not always done itself any favours in the way it has portrayed itself to a sceptical public - it suffers from a reputation for arrogance and secrecy, and a tendency to talk more to itself than to the public at large, moreover in a language that forbids public understanding and involvement.

Members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Nuclear Energy, undertook a three day fact finding visit to Finland in June. Their main purpose was to find out more about the processes the Finns followed in reaching political and public consensus on plans for a waste repository for spent fuel, and for a fifth nuclear reactor.
