Having settled-in as chairman of the Nuclear Industry Association it has been heartening for me to get out and about and meet so many highly-committed representatives of our industry at recent events. It has certainly been a hectic schedule, with the government’s nuclear consultation and deliberative events, through to the busy party conference season and on to the closing day of the consultation, coming as it did on the 50th anniversary of the Windscale fire and resultant media interest once again in the nuclear story. It has certainly been busy and I have been impressed by the professionalism and teamwork shown by member companies in getting involved in these events, feeding back useful information and generally supporting the industry’s reputation and profile at such a critical time. The party conference season was a chance to get close to politicians and engage through a series of fringe meetings, one-on-ones, and trades union-sponsored dinners, and to remind conference-goers by way of the specially-commissioned NIA exhibition stand the vital role that the nuclear industry plays in the UK. Secretary of State John Hutton speaking at our fringe meeting at the Labour party conference was a definite highlight. The NIA also recently lead a UK trade mission of nine member companies to ENC 07 in Brussels, helped focus work on the UK’s Nuclear Justification application and forged ahead with it’s expert working groups on decommissioning, new build, energy policy and communications. The NIA is now working towards the key end-of-year nuclear conference, Energy Choices 07, which will concentrate on public attitudes towards nuclear and will analyse the language we as an industry use to communicate with the outside world. It promises to be a fascinating event and I look forward to meeting many of your there and at the annual NIA/BNES dinner that follows. |
