Since our last publication, the industry has adapted to changes in our sector both at a governmental and industry level. John Hutton was announced as Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory reform. This department (to be known as BERR) replaced the Department of trade and industry (DTI) and sees the return of Malcolm Wicks as Minister of Energy. To ensure NIA members are up to date with the latest parliamentary affairs news, we have introduced a new website section “Government News”. www.niauk.org/members-area/government-news NIA welcomed the Energy White Paper and consultation about nuclear power generation published on 23 May 2007. This is an ideal opportunity for industry, organisations and individuals to influence and share key messages to promote nuclear energy as part of a safe, secure and balanced energy mix. To co-ordinate industry response to the plethora of consultations published this summer and the development of policy that will impact on new build and the industry generally the NIA has reformed the Energy Policy Steering Group, chaired by Lord O’Neill. A dominating issue throughout is Public Acceptance of the nuclear industry. In response the NIA has reconstituted the Communications Working Group (CWG). Chaired by Adrian Bull (Westinghouse) the purpose is to provide a forum in which key messages can be agreed across the industry and will aim to ensure that member companies and the association’s stakeholder communications are coordinated and effective. |
