NIA member, Parsons Brinckerhoff, recently held their annual ‘Project of the Year’ awards in London with the winning study being awarded for a report carried out for the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) project.
The winning team’s project manager was Andrew Pearce, while the principal-in-charge was Alistair Smith who is chairman of the NIA’s industrial affairs group. The PBMR is being developed in South Africa to offer a small scale reactor using passively safe technology and proliferation resistant fuel making it ideal for distributed power generation and for countries who are building up their nuclear generation capacity. The award winning study carried out by Parsons Brinckerhoff assessed the potential market for the PBMR around the world by forecasting the future power generation environment in every country around the world to assess where demand is likely to occur. The study concluded that over the next 30 years nuclear power generation is likely to become the lowest cost form of power generation in many countries and there will be a considerable demand for the small reactors offered by the PBMR project. The client for the study, PBMR (Pty) Ltd, were represented at the award ceremony by Amanda MacMillan, NIA Member Services Manager. Certificates were presented to Amanda, on behalf of the client and to Jhansi Rao representing the winning Parsons Brinckerhoff team, by former Olympic triple-jump champion Jonathan Edwards. |
