The long-term future of the UK nuclear industry received another significant boost recently, with the start of building work on the new Nuclear Academy, in West Cumbria.
The commencement of work on the new academy, alongside the appointment of Andrew King as Chief Executive, signal significant progress towards the development of an employer led training facility, specialising in nuclear courses. Once operational, the academy will provide varied training, ranging from NVQ’s to foundation degrees. Furthermore, when nuclear employers identify a skills gap, the academy will be able to offer specialised training as needed. This will ensure that companies have consistent access to staff possessing the necessary balance of abilities; whilst students receive a flexible and innovative education. The project has received £15 million in funding, with notable donors including the Northwest Regional Development Agency, the NDA and British Nuclear Group. Other Appointments to the board of directors include Terry Gilbert of AMEC and Neil Foreman of Centronic. The new facility should be ready to receive its first student intake in September 2008, becoming the delivery arm of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear. |
