French and Bulgarian nuclear industry visits the UK | Print |  E-mail
By Norman Buckley, NIA Business Development Manager
The end of last year saw two inward trade missions to the UK from Bulgaria and France. By Norman Buckley, NIA Business Development Manager

A team of twelve French companies, members of the Pole Nucleaire De Bourgogne (PNB), a French nuclear industry group of companies engaged in the manufacturing of power plant key components in the Burgundy region of France, visited the UK in October. The French companies included AMG, AREVA, AUBERT & DUVAL, CEREC, CITA Production, CLM Industries, EDF Energy, ITG, NTC, SFARSTEEL, VALINOX NUCLEAIRE and VERITAS.

The visit of the PNB was arranged at the request of the Economic Department of the French Embassy in London. During the visit the French delegation received a presentation from the NDA Director of Strategy. This was followed by a joint seminar arranged by NIA and which was hosted by UKTI at the DTI Conference Centre in London. The seminar was well attended with around 20 UK companies represented.

During the seminar, both UK and French companies had the opportunity of learning about the products and services each company provides through a series of presentations. In addition, an afternoon discussion panel comprising representatives from E.ON, EDF and NIA allowed delegates to obtain an energy utilities perspective on what is needed to allow new nuclear build to proceed in the UK. This was followed by a series of one to one meetings with interested UK companies and the day finished with a reception hosted by UKTI and NIA.

Overall the visit proved to be very successful fulfilling its objectives and providing opportunity for NIA members to make contact, obtain information and network with French companies operating in the international nuclear industry.

November saw a Bulgarian trade delegation comprising five companies, all members of BULATOM, NIA’s sister organisation in Bulgaria, accompanied by UKTI, visited the UK. The companies are all engaged in work in the nuclear industry in Bulgaria which provides significant opportunities for UK companies wishing to engage in export trade associated with decommissioning and new nuclear plant construction.

The Bulgarian companies included Risk Engineering Ltd EQE, Hydroremont I & G, Atoma Consult, Euro Stars/Atomenergomontage. NIA in conjunction with UKTI arranged a joint Bulgaria/ UK seminar which included NIA members hosted by UKTI at the DTI Conference Centre in London. This was well attended with around 15 NIA UK member companies represented and allowed information exchange and opportunity for one-to one meetings together with an informal reception allowing good opportunity for networking and forging of good relationships between Bulgarian and UK companies. NIA with help from British Energy also arranged a visit to Sizewell B Power Station for the Bulgarian delegation.

Feedback from all participants and UKTI relating to the above events has been very positive and members felt the events were well organised and useful. There will be a an opportunity to visit Bulgaria in NIA’s 2007/08 overseas trade programme, currently programmed for June 2007 so please watch out for details that are circulated about three months prior to each event. The programme currently planned for this year is:
