Firstly, I would like to say that I am honoured to cover the role of NIA chairman while we look to appoint a full-time replacement to Philip Dewhurst, who left in December. I would like to place on record my appreciation for the achievements made by Philip and the dedicated team at the NIA. In his two year tenure, the Association achieved very high visibility and helped get nuclear and the issues of member companies to the forefront of national debate. We wish him well for the future.

The issue of funding of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) came very much to the fore over the festive season following press reports claiming DTI cuts could put clean-up work at risk. The NDA was quick to issue a statement seeking to clarify the situation which of course was of huge significance to many NIA members.

After five years at the NIA Mirada Kirschel left the organisation at the end of December. Miranda has served in a variety of roles at the NIA latterly as Corporate Affairs Manager, where she worked primarily on public affairs issues and served as administrator to the All Party Group on Nuclear Energy.
