Hugh Collum started work in 1959 at Coopers and Lybrand, where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant. He then moved into general management in the brewing industry before becoming Group Finance Director of the Courage Group Ltd from 1973-1981. He joined Cadbury Schweppes in 1981 where he became the Group Finance Director. His next move came in 1987 with the post of Group Finance Director of Beecham Group Plc. Following the merger of Beecham and SmithKline in 1989 he became Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer of SmithKline Beecham plc, a post he held until the end of 1998. He holds a number of Non-Executive Directorships, including Safeway plc and Whitehead Mann Group plc. He is also Deputy Chairman of Celltech Group plc. He has recently stepped down from the Boards of Invensys plc and South African Breweries plc. He was a member of the Cadbury Committee on the Financial Aspects of Corporate Governance and was also Chairman of the "Hundred Group of Finance Directors" from 1990-92
